The music business is a funny thing. The most talented ones are not always the lucky ones who make it big and live in houses that are only for the super-rich. You can tune into any radio station and hear the gears grinding from the machine that is the commercial music business. A lot of times, the thing missing from what you are hearing on the radio is true, hard-earned, talent.
To find truly talented artists, we need to go deeper than stadium shows. We need to look to our local bars where bands are honing their talent every weekend.
We all have that thing in us that we know we were born to do. Whether it's in our blood or we develop the interest later in life, we know this is what we were put here to do.
While photographing a performance by The Mark Evans Band, I couldn't help but notice them waiting to go on stage. It got my mind thinking. These guys have been doing this since they were in their single digits. Guitarist, Bob Brodie, and Bassist, Roy Fisher, played together in band when they were teenagers. These musicians have been creating music so long it's not skill anymore, it's instinct. There is no nervousness about getting on that stage in front of a packed house. There may be family and friends among the crowd, but there are also people who have never heard them play a single note. There is not a care in the world. They know who they are, they know what they are capable of and they know they are going to create a magical night for everyone in front of them. People made the effort to leave their house, for the chance to forget about life for a while and simply enjoy live music. What some of them don't know, is just what a treat they are in for because these are some of the finest musicians in the Philadelphia Area.
Each night when the lights go down, Mark Evens opens himself up to perform the songs he wrote about his life, his struggles and his love. With each song, he bares his soul to everyone willing to listen as he brings a calming joy to everyone within earshot. They have all struggled with the obstacles that come with being a musician. Here they are, all these years later, still following the dream they had when they were kids. The only difference is, they get to share that dream together.
