Eastern State has had its fair share of inmates over the years. The most famous resident though, was Chicago Mobster Al Capone (1899-1947). Capone was convicted on the charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Although he was sentenced to the maximum sentence of one year in prison, he only served seven months as inmate #5527. Capone was not just your ordinary inmate as you can tell. His cell was fully furnished with a nice chair where he would sit by his radio and listen to waltz music. He had “donated” money to the Eastern State Penitentiary softball team, he even had a boxing match with the warden who thanked him for his generosity. Reports say that the cell next to him was for his bodyguard and both cells were very rarely locked, allowing the men to come and go as they please.
