March is Women’s History Month! To celebrate, we are highlighting four women in Philadelphia’s history that have sadly been forgotten in time.

Grumblethorpe, Elfreth’s Ally, The Second Bank of America, Independence Hall, The Academy of Music and The Philadelphia Orchestra all had one woman responsible for their continued existence. Find about these sites and all the other ones this strong-willed woman saves.

This woman and her daughter survives one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history only to spend the rest of their lives aiding others in their time of need. Written by Savanna R. Fisher.

When her husband mysteriously disappears, her love for him will Not Phade Away™. Her final wish is to have her heart surgically removed and placed in his grave.

As a school teacher, she writes a poem about a real-life experience with one of her students that we continue to teach our children today. As an “editress” of one of the most influential magazines in the nation, she uses her platform to guide the country into such traditional practices such as white wedding dresses and Christmas Trees in the home. When the country is most divided during the Civil War, she brings the North and South together to celebrate this new holiday of Thanksgiving.
