A Grand Celebration To a Legendary General

Philadelphia, Pa
It was a grand celebration at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The General Meade Society held its annual birthday celebration to honor the two hundred and ninth birthday of a celebrated hero. General George Meade (1815-1872) fought in many of the key battles in the Eastern Theater of The Civil War. He won victoriously at The Battle of Gettysburg when he defeated General Robert E. Lee and his army of Confederate soldiers in what was known as bloodiest battle during The War Between The States.
The Civil War Band kicked off the ceremony that led to a Union Soldier march to the grave of General Meade. General Meade Society President, Andy Waskie, served as the master of ceremonies as various society members talked about the life of General Meade, both as a United States General and as he was in his personal life. Descendants of General Meade were on hand to say a few words as well. The event ended with the General's drink of choice, a Champaign toast and a Civil War gun salute.
The General Meade Society is an active organization that meets regularly to discuss General Meade’s role in the Civil War, as well as other related topics, and contributes to Civil War preservation. For more information, please check out their website at:
