“Home On The Farm”

“A Happy home is more than a roof over your head, it’s a foundation under your feet”

~ Amish Proverb

Lancaster County provides so much more than most are aware of. Not only do they produce goods, but if you have ever stayed there, you know that it also provides silence, wisdom, great examples of work ethic, peace of mind, tranquility and much more. As a family that live in the hustle and bustle of big city life here in Philadelphia, we regularly vacation in Lancaster County to get away from all that noise. Personally, I like to think outside the box and learn new things. My fascination with the Amish and their way of life drives me to learn as much as I can without actually becoming Amish myself. I just don’t think the haircut would suit me.

I admire the Amish for their simple way of life. Do not be fooled, the simple life does not mean an easy life. They cut out the distractions of modern life and replace it with hard work and discipline. I know the Military also do the same thing (they even have their own special haircut), but the Amish have a peaceful nature to them. I have yet to see an upset Amish person lose their temper.

Most people would not see them as celebrities. It is true that they are not known individually by name. An average of 8.85 million people visit Lancaster County each year. The Amish understand that they peak a lot of curiosity from the “English”, as they call us, yet they handle it surprisingly well.

The Amish settled here in Lancaster County because the ground is remarkably fertile for their crops. However, their farms are surrounded by the beauty of Mother Nature. As a photographer, this is my favorite place to capture. I once asked some locals for some good locations to photograph. They told me to turn in any direction.

There is an old saying, “home is where the heart is”. I may be from Philadelphia, but Lancaster County is where my heart is.
