“SOLD!”

Whenever I tell someone that I attended a Mud Sale, they always ask why am I buying mud. Mud sales are auctions held at various fire houses throughout Lancaster County. Attendees can bid on everything from furniture, farm equipment, sheds to handmade crafts such as garden décor. These auctions rotate each week from fire company to fire company and begin in the late winter. As the ground is thawing out it can sometimes be muddy. That is why they call them Mud Sales.

My family and I attended our first one in the summer of 2021. I was mesmerized as a spectator, to see this for the first time. The crowd is anticipating what will be put on the auction block next. The auctioneer begins going at a mile a minute. You have to listen carefully as he calls the bidding war. This clerk is waiting for the latest item to be sold so she can record it.

This young Amish man was one of the bid callers at this auction. He was so animated that I could not resist capturing him in action.
