“Stalkless Farm”

A lot of people come to Lancaster County in the summer. The weather is nice, animals are out, and the crops are growing. What most people do NOT see is what happens AFTER the summer “show” is over. As visitors go back home to their everyday life, life on the farm never ends. Day after day, week after week, year after year, generation after generation. It has been that way ever since the Amish settled here in the 1720’s as part of William Penn’s “Holy Experiment”.

By early October, the fields have been plowed leaving rows of corn stalk stubble intentionally to reuse the organic litter. What most visitors don’t know is that even in the “off-season”, Lancaster County is even more peaceful and relaxing. I simply stand back in udder awe at the family run mini-villages that each farm contains. It’s as intricate as an old-fashioned clock. Each building doing its part to make the entire farm run smoothly. It makes me wish I could be a fly on the wall just to see how it all works from the inside.
